Book review No. 2 "FASTER".
So another book review, never thought I would be writing blogs a year ago. Certainly would not have thought they would have been about book either. Here I am thought getting a good chunk or reading done and hopefully guiding some people to some good enjoyable books.
The last week or more I have been reading a book called “FASTER” the Author, Michael Hutchinson. From the very first page I knew I was going to enjoy this book a lot. You know when a book gives you the want to keep reading it, your in bed and knowing you have to be up early its already too late, you keep saying “just another page” and “okay, just one more”. Then you end up doing an entire chapter (and with my reading speed that is impressive)! This book gives you that feeling all the way through.
I have only really been “into” cycling for just under 2 years, so I had heard of Michael Hutchinson but did not know much more than he specialised in the art of Time Trial. The truth test I have heard it called before. The race where you cannot hide away your actual ability, you have no team mates to draft, its all about you and noone else. So knowing this, when I picked up the book I had instant respect for him before I had started.
Yes, that first page will instantly make you laugh, I will not spoil the surprise but it sets the tone really well. Michael does a great job all the way through the book at giving out really fine details about the aspects of riding, and finding all the extra speed you can, while splashing it with these types of moments of comedy and fun. If a lot of you who do read this book, and are like me, you also try to look at details where “free speed” can be gained, you will love some of these moments Michael describes, all very funny from his own experiences where you can see yourself having been there too!
As you read through the book you are getting, not only a huge amount of information direct from a top notch international Time Trialler. He has also got a huge list of GB athletes and coaches input (Sir Dave Brailsford, Sir Chirs Hoy, Chris Boardman, Dame Sarah Storey, Shane Sutton, to name a few) into the book, these add more and more substance on top of Michaels knowledge.
I would really advise this book to literally anyone who rides a bike in anyway. You don’t have to be a full time professional looking for those tiny “marginal gains”, weekend warriors, those who commute to work, those who DO look for every second, and those who finish a TT and look down at the new £2k wheels and wonder why they haven’t given you an extra 2kph that they said they would, this book is for you all!
It was a sad moment when I finished it.
Thanks for reading.
